Google Business Profile Setup for Philippine Small Businesses
A step-by-step guide to claiming and optimizing your free Google Business Profile so customers nearby can find you on Google Search and Maps.
Google Business Profile Setup for Philippine Small Businesses
When someone searches "coffee shop near me" or "dentist in Quezon City", Google often shows a map with a few businesses. Those listings come from Google Business Profile (GBP), formerly called Google My Business. It is free. For many local businesses, it is the most valuable thing you can set up for being found.
This guide walks through setup and optimization. Exact screens and options change from time to time, so follow what Google shows you.
Before You Start
Prepare these:
- Exact business name as it appears on your signage. Do not stuff keywords into the name. That can get the listing suspended.
- Address (if customers visit you) or service area (if you go to customers).
- Phone number you actually answer.
- Opening hours, including holiday hours.
- Website link, if you have one.
- A few clear photos: storefront, interior, products or team at work.
- A Google account that the business owns, not a staff member's personal account.
Step 1: Search First
Search your business name on Google Maps. It may already exist, created by Google or a customer. If so, claim it instead of making a duplicate. Duplicates hurt.
Step 2: Create or Claim the Profile
Go to the Google Business Profile page, sign in and follow the prompts to add your business name, category, location, contact details and website.
Choose the primary category carefully. It is one of the strongest signals. Pick the most specific one that fits, such as "Dental clinic" or "Filipino restaurant" rather than a broad label. You may add secondary categories that truly apply.
Step 3: Set Location Properly
- Storefront or clinic: enter the full street address, barangay, city and postal code, and place the map pin precisely. In Philippine addresses, consistent formatting matters. Use the same format on your website and Facebook.
- Service business with no public address: hide the address and set service areas, such as cities or municipalities you cover. Do not list an address you do not operate from.
Step 4: Verify
Google must confirm you control the business. Depending on your situation this may be by phone, text, email, video, or postcard. Postcards can be slow in some areas, so start early. Do not skip verification. Unverified profiles are limited.
Step 5: Complete Every Field
Profiles that are fully filled out look more trustworthy.
- Hours: accurate, and update during Christmas, Holy Week and typhoons or closures.
- Description: plain language on what you do, who you serve and where. Mention your city and neighborhood naturally. No hype, no phone numbers in it.
- Services or products: list real services with short descriptions. Add price ranges if you are comfortable.
- Attributes: such as accepts GCash or card, wheelchair accessible, dine-in, delivery, appointments required.
- Booking or order links: if available.
- Messaging and Q&A: only enable what you will answer promptly.
Step 6: Add Photos
Add real photos. Stock images do not help. Useful ones:
- Outside, from the street, so people can recognize it.
- Inside and the parking or entrance.
- Your best products or dishes, with good light.
- Staff at work, with their permission.
- A logo and cover photo.
Add new photos regularly. Phone photos are fine if they are sharp and well lit.
Step 7: Reviews
Reviews influence both rankings and decisions.
- Ask happy customers after good service. A small card with a QR code, or a link sent by chat, makes it easy.
- Never buy or fake reviews, and do not offer rewards in exchange for reviews. It violates the rules and can get reviews removed or your profile penalized.
- Reply to every review, short and polite, including negative ones. Do not argue. Offer to fix it offline.
- Respond within a few days. It shows customers there is a real owner.
Step 8: Keep It Alive
- Post updates, offers or events now and then if the feature is available to you.
- Check the profile monthly for wrong edits suggested by the public.
- Update hours for special days.
- Review the performance numbers Google provides, such as searches, calls and direction requests, to see what is working.
Connecting Your Profile to Your Website
Your website should carry the same name, address and phone as your profile, written the same way. Put a Google Map embed and a "Get directions" link on your contact page. Mention the cities and areas you serve in normal sentences. This consistency helps Google confirm that the details are real.
If you do not have a website, a Google Business Profile still helps, but a site gives it somewhere to send people, and gives you pages that can rank for services and neighborhoods.
Mistakes to Avoid
- Keyword-stuffed business name. Risks suspension.
- Fake or virtual addresses to appear in a city you are not in.
- Multiple listings for one location.
- Wrong pin. Customers get lost, and leave bad reviews.
- Ignoring messages and calls. Slow replies lose customers.
- Letting an ex-employee remain owner. Always keep ownership access in your control.
How Long Until It Helps?
There is no fixed timeline, and nobody can promise rankings. A verified, complete, active profile with real reviews gives you a fair chance to show up for nearby searches. Treat it as a long-term asset and keep improving it.
